I started volunteering as a sighted guide for Eye Matters two years ago through my friend Hayley who had been a guide for a few months prior. She informed me about the charity and what guiding required. My great grandfather whom I never had the opportunity of meeting was blind and so I felt an affiliation to the charity and was keen to get involved.
I had previously finished working full time a few months prior and was very excited about the prospect of meeting new people, helping when needed at events and supporting the charity. I have seen Eye Matter grow from strength to strength with membership numbers increasing over the years. Volunteers are a must to help and support individuals on the day of the event.
I would encourage others to volunteer for Eye Matters as the team do amazing on-line sessions as well as meet up events so people aren’t isolated and can enjoy activities that sighted people take for granted such as theatre trips, sporting events and social activities.
