On Friday 21st August, four visually impaired people, attended 45 minutes of circuit training, followed by 15 minutes of seated yoga, before plunging into their swimming session at the London Aquatics Centre (managed by Everyone Active).
This was a new experience for Bushra, “I recently attended an accessible circuit training class followed by a 1-to-1 swimming lesson, and I had a fantastic experience. I enjoyed both sessions and would recommend them. Afterwards I felt more confident, active and fitter.”
She continued, I had never tried circuit training before, but I really enjoyed it. It was fun, challenging, and gave me a great workout. Trying different exercises was amazing, and the trainers were incredibly supportive—guiding us, keeping time, and providing 1-to-1 assistance whenever we needed it. There were four of us in the group, and we had a great time together. By the end, I felt like I had really worked hard and was getting fitter.”
The session was led by Louise, supported by Kirsten and their swimming coach Andrew. Each station had a chair, a set of hand held weights 2kg, a yoga mat and a resistance band. They were encouraged to stand behind the chairs using them if needed for support. Every exercise was timed and audio described before it began. There was plenty of adaptions ready for those who were unable to perform some of the moves so no one was excluded.
Set within a private room the group, everyone was put through their paces in a carefully designed programme to suit their individual needs. Concluding with a Yoga breathing class ensured they were all prepared for their next activity in the water. Everyone commented at how supported they had felt throughout the experience.
Bushra was equally appreciative of her swimming session, “The 1-to-1 swimming lesson was also brilliant. The swimming teacher covering the session pushed me to the next level while supporting me throughout. I could really see my progress, and I felt very proud of myself.”
