We’re More Alike Than We Think: Exploring Kindness and Shared Human Experience
In this Eye Matter session with Laura Brodie, we will explore the concept of shared human experience, a central element of self-compassion. When we are struggling, it can often feel as though we are alone in what we are going through. This session invites participants to shift that perspective by recognising that difficulty, uncertainty, and the desire for well-being are universal human experiences.
We will reflect on the understanding that all people, in their own way, want to feel safe, to be happy, and to feel connected. By bringing awareness to this common ground, we begin to soften the tendency to “other” ourselves or those around us, and instead cultivate a more compassionate and inclusive way of relating.
Alongside this, we will explore the character strength of kindness — both towards ourselves and others. Kindness, when practised with awareness, becomes a powerful way to respond to shared human vulnerability, supporting emotional balance and connection. This aligns with core mindfulness practices of awareness, acceptance, and relating to experience with greater compassion.
